Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has absolutely become the most formidable challenger to Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Although it remains to be seen if Trump or DeSantis decide to run, the latter is poised to enjoy a strong following after his successful fight against the coronavirus and his ability to make his state a haven for people who have felt like their freedoms have been taken from them in their previous states. DeSantis has been in the news for a few reasons as of late, with the most recent being his controversial decision to fly migrants into Martha’s Vineyard that were initially seeking refuge in Florida. But notably, DeSantis is about to become the single greatest fundraiser of any Governor in his state, or in any state, in the entire history of the United States.
DeSantis has been directing donors to his campaign committee and to his political action committee, with their being a limit to the former and no limit for the latter. Donors for the Florida Governor include Citadel CEO Ken Griffin, who has donated over $10 million to DeSantis in the last four years. DeSantis has raised over $174 million since taking over as Governor, and it will likely be plenty to keep him in his position as he has a sizable lead over Democratic candidate Charlie Crist. Although the money is being raised for the immediate campaign for reelection as Florida’s governor, it looks pretty certain that DeSantis has his eyes, and pockets, set on 2024.
