New releases Knock At The Cabin and 80 For Brady knocked Avatar: The Way Of Water down from No. 1 at the domestic box office this weekend, ending its seven-week reign in the top spot that netted more than $2 billion in worldwide sales, according to film studios’ data.
In its debut weekend, director M. Night Shyamalan’s horror film Knock At The Cabin was the No. 1 movie domestically.
It earned $14.2 million in the U.S., and had a global opening of over $21.2 million.
80 For Brady—a buddy comedy themed after retiring NFL quarterback Tom Brady—took the No. 2 spot, earning $12.5 million in its first weekend.
Avatar: The Way Of Water ranked No. 1 and raked in $10.8 million domestically and $38.7 million globally, down from $15.7 million and $58.1 million last weekend, respectively.
The Way Of Water has earned $2.174 billion since it was released, and remains the fourth highest-grossing movie in history.
Avatar: The Way Of Water could soon surpass 1997’s Titanic ($2.194 billion) as the third highest-grossing film. Both films were directed by James Cameron.
Knock At The Cabin received a 68% critics rating and a 64% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The thriller stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff and Rupert Grint. Meanwhile, 80 For Brady stars heavyweights Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno and Sally Field, as four friends who travel to see Tom Brady and the New England Patriots play in the Super Bowl. Brady and other former Patriots players Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman appear in the film. It has a 64% rating from critics, but a 91% score from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences gave it an A- grade on Cinemascore.
80 For Brady was released days after Brady’s second—and apparently final—retirement from the NFL after 23 years in the league. It also comes just one week before the Super Bowl.
